Hawker Stalls in the 70's Come Alive

Posted by Kirsty on May 9, 2014

Food is an obsession in Singapore, and we can prove it by the number of hawker centers found almost everywhere.....
If you are a visitor, you can't leave Singapore without visiting one of these modern day hawker centers.

but what about these oldies back in the 70's? Not that I am THAT old ahem.... I just borrowed this black and white photo from HERE.

These old hawker stalls in the 70s all came alive here in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 27, 2014.

Toa Payoh, Old Airport Road, Geylang Lane, all claimed they are THE BEST!

SAN's very first Singapore Hawker Food Fest was a success, thanks to our Satay Man Jason Benedict and his family.

Jason spent weeks at his backyard, from building the food stalls to adding little details, creating the old hawker centre atmosphere, brought back good old memories for some of us, Singaporeans who left home and haven't been back for years, and introduced the Singapore Hawker Center food culture to our foreign friends at the same time.

Now just look at these noteworthy local flavours.....

Aunty! Chee Chong Fun one packet, chilli a lot ok?

*In mandarin (sort of) Aunty! Chee Chong fun 一包,辣椒多多 hor?

Alamak, line so long, must be good lah!

Like always, great food, fun company......

Oh ya, when you are there, don't forget to vote for PAP!

Suda Maken? So shiok!!!!

Last but not least, we would like to say WELCOME to our new member Lena, and at the same time, saying FAREWELL to Janice Tong, who will be moving to Connecticut for a new job posting. All the best Janice and Jason, take care and don't forget to stop by to say hi when you come back to Las Vegas for a visit!

And your Singlish lesson for the day - Shiok
A local slang in Singapore to described all feelings that is fantastic.

HAD to go outside today......

Posted by Kirsty on March 17, 2014

The weather is doing what the weather always does in March here in this part of the country - PERFECT 80!

We just HAD to go outside and play today.

WHERE TO?

Nevada's oldest State Park - Valley of Fire

Recognized nationally for its outstanding scenic, geological and archeological features, Valley of Fire is also Nevada's first State park.

And it's a short drive from Las Vegas. When we set our GPS from North/West end of Vegas, it said 48 miles.

The view is pretty spectacular. Just imagine this land when dinosaurs walked the earth.

This group is called the bee hives.

The Rainbow Vista.

And the Fire Waves.

After the group hike. We gathered at White Domes picnic area to ..... of course Maken!  But wait, let's rewind back to 6 AM that morning.....

At the break of dawn, someone actually placed a huge sign on the picnic table to CHOPEthe place.

Long time members.....

New members.... (Welcome Maya, Joe and Rosie!)

Young members.....

Didn't we all have FUN!!!!!

And your Singlish lesson for the day - CHOPE
Slang for saving something beforehand, reserve a seat, a book, etc. Singaporeans have a habit of leaving objects (packet of tissue paper, umbrella, motorcycle helmet) on seats/tables to reserve places. It is not an uncommon scene at Singapore hawker centers.

Chinese New Year Dinner 2014

Posted by Kirsty on December 6, 2013

Chinese New Year 2014 is the year of the Green Wood Horse according to Chinese astrology. Being wood is the element of spring, when plants have their new growth, this is said to be a lucky year, I don't know about you, but I sure feel lucky that in a place like Las Vegas, we have a small but close knit community like SAN, we get together often for good food and best part of all, great company.

This year, we decided to have a change and move our Chinese New Year Dinner to Satay Thai Bistro & Bar.

Here are the details for our Chinese New Year Dinner 2014

You know you are a Singaporean when......
(Zion National Park Road Trip photo post #2)

Posted by Kirsty on November 24, 2013

You know you are a Singaporean when.....

20 minutes after the BBQ ended....

the place is as clean as it could be.

Not a piece of food crumb or potato chips left on the picnic table and bench.

Is there really a party of 22 here a while ago?

Oh yes, a group of SAN members went to Zion National Park on November 8, 2013.
After the morning hike on Saturday, November 9th, we gathered by the stream for BBQ....

Like every gathering we had, Singaporean clean up the place after we used. Strict rules or fine, say what you like, if you grow up in Singapore, you'll know that we were taught at very young age, in school and at home how we should "behave in society", how to keep our home and public places clean, not to litter, not to spit. We are proud to say that we are the cleanest country in the world, and we do carry our good habit with us even we live overseas now.

Here are a few more photos we took at Zion National Park and Cable Mountain Lodge.

Late day sun is my favorite.

The "Lovescape" at Zion Canyon Village.

Inspired by an ancient custom believed to have originated in China, this "Lovescape" was designed to give couples, families and friends a place to symbolically "lock their love"

Cities around the world have similar "Love Locks" too, like the Lover's Bridge in Paris.

and this one in Prague.

Oh we just love road trips like this one....

New Consul-General - San Francisco

Posted by Kirsty on September 17, 2013

Randy and I attended the reception to celebrate Singapore's 48th National Day September 9 organized by The Consulate-General of The Republic of Singapore in San Francisco. We had the honor to meet with the new consul-general Mr. Chris A Cheang as well as many leaders from other Singaporean groups.

For more information and consular services in San Francisco, click HERE.

The next day, Stanley Leong, the representative from OSU whom most of us met at our own National Day Party in Las Vegas, and his wife Dorcas spent a day with me exploring Marin Headlands, a hilly peninsula at the southernmost end of Marin County, California, North of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge.

It was an easy hike up to the hill top and the view is stunning.

Unlike other Golden Gate Bridge viewing area in San Francisco, Marin Headlands has fewer tourists around the area. It was peaceful, calm, and had a great view of the Pacific Ocean as well.

Dinner was at Shiok! a Singapore Kitchen at Menlo Park.

The Or Luak (Oyster Omelet) was yummy and the egg plant and sambal sotong were good as well! If you are in the bay area and craving for Singaporean taste, Shiok is the place to go!

Singapore Hawker Magic in th Box

Posted by Kirsty on September 3, 2013

It may not be set in a bustling hawker center in Singapore, and they are not your favorite Nam Kee Chicken Rice, Katong Laksa or Beach Road Prawn Mee, but like we overseas Singaporeans say "Boh hee hae ya ho". This Prima Taste is a pretty darn good alternative when the hawker food craving strikes.

Go to Amazon.com, type in "Prima Taste" in the search box, and you will find all sorts of Prima taste favorites like Singapore Satay, Mee Rebus, Rendang etc. They come in packs of 4 or 6 and most items are eligible for free shipping.
It might be a good idea to find a few Singaporeans to share with so you can get them in a small quantity instead of 6 boxes of the same kind.

And your Singlish lesson for the day - Boh hee hae ya ho: Literally translated as No fish prawn also good! A Hokkien proverb which translates as "If there are no fish, prawns are just as good." The statement is used in a situation where you cannot get what you want and have to accept a second choice.
